Lava Lake

“Photographer Geoff Mackley and his crew descended 1,300 feet to the ‘lava lake’ in Marum Volcano on Vanuatu’s Ambrym Island.”

From Huffington Post Article

Volcanologist (yes, they exist) Geoff Mackley was interviewed by Matt Lauer about this latest jaunt into a volcano.Mackley, a regular dare devil, descended into the volcano on the Vanuatan island of Ambrym, which he claims has some of the worst weather on the planet. Mackley told Lauer, “The volcano pumps out so much green house gas, it creates its own weather.”

While he recognizes that “a lot of people might think I’m crazy,” Mackley is thinking about making his volcano rappelling adventures into an extreme tourist trip.

I had two thoughts come to mind. First, I thought storm chasers were crazy, this guy’s willingly going into a Volcano?! Why would anyone do that unless your name was Frodo and you were looking to offload a little bit of jewelry?

The second thought came closely after that as something that Tim Keller once wrote rang in my ears.

When Jesus was cut off from God he went into the deepest pit and most powerful furnace, beyond all imagining. He experienced the full wrath of the Father. And he did it voluntarily, for us. Jesus suffered infinitely more than any human soul in eternal hell, yet he looks at us and says, “It was worth it.” What could make us feel more loved and valued than that? The Savior presented in the gospel waded through hell itself rather than lose us, and no other savior ever depicted has loved us at such a cost.”
